Maybe you have heard your friends, family or even other patients in the office talk about the benefits of Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas”. It may be an option during your or your kids next dental appointment.
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective, non-allergenic, non-irritating sedative gas that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. It is one of the safest forms of sedation available. Most patients begin to feel the effects of the Nitrous Oxide take effect within 5-10 minutes. After the treatment is complete the effects of this gas are completely reversed within 10 minutes by breathing Oxygen through the same mask.
Who can have Nitrous Oxide?
Almost all patients; There are practically no side effects associated with Nitrous Oxide use. Occasionally, patients with asthma, bronchitis or lung disorders cannot use this type of sedation.
What are the benefits of having Nitrous Oxide during dental treatment?
- Nitrous Oxide helps eliminate fear and reduces anxiety making you more comfortable during your appointment.
- You remain conscious and are fully able to communicate with us during your appointment
- The depth of sedation can be varied during the appointment as required
- Your gag reflex and saliva flow are decreased
- It is safe for small children making dental treatment in office quicker and easier
How does Nitrous Oxide feel?
Each individual experiences the effects differently. In general as the depth of sedation increases you will experience the following:
- Tingling of your hands and feet
- Warmth
- Ringing sensation or your hearing may become distant but more distinct
- Euphoria and relaxation
- Feelings of heaviness or lightness in your arm and legs
What if I don’t like the feeling?
If you feel uncomfortable at any time while breathing the Nitrous Oxide gas you can breathe through your mouth and any temporary discomfort will be relieved in just a few breaths. We can also adjust the amount of gas being delivered or turn it to just oxygen to reduce or eliminate the amount of Nitrous Oxide gas you are receiving.
What should I do before my Nitrous Oxide Sedation appointment?
Please discuss any questions or concerns about the sedation with us prior to your appointment. Inform us of any changes in your medical history or any medications you are taking. We generally recommend that you avoid eating a large meal 2-3 hours prior to the treatment and use the washroom before your appointment. The less you talk or breathe through your mouth the faster and more efficiently the Nitrous Oxide gas works.
