It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Christmas is my favourite time of year. I love the connection and celebration of family and friends. I have a December birthday, which also makes Christmas an extra special time for me and my family. When I was growing up my parents made sure that no Christmas decorations went up before my birthday. My birthday was celebrated and then the tree went up. The Christmas tree decorating, with the smell, lights and hallmark decorations grew to be my favourite part of the season. As I got older I encouraged and eventually insisted the tree go up earlier and earlier in December so it could be enjoyed as long as possible. Another Christmas tradition that the women in my family enjoy is afternoon tea downtown Vancouver which is followed by a [...]

Sweet Swap Winner

Congratulations to our 2014 Sweep Swap winner Maddie! Children’s oral health is a priority to us.  Teaching parents and kids about oral health when they are young can change a child’s oral health for a lifetime. One of the most important lessons is regarding sugar.  Your teeth are most affected not by the amount of sugar you consume but more importantly by the frequency. Having that candy around for weeks is worse than eating as much as you can in a few days and then getting rid of it. It is important to limit the amount of sugar you consume in general for your overall health as well.   Don’t get me wrong we are big fans of Halloween here at Steveston Smiles; We want you to have a fun, [...]

Toothpaste

Toothpaste has been in the news a lot lately. Colgate Total was in the news a while back because it contains Triclosan which has been shown to cause both cancer and developmental problems in rodents. Of course we are not rodents but this is still concerning. Most recently, Crest 3D has been in the news for containing small plastic beads made out of polyethylene. I always assumed that these colourful beads were soluble and not a concern, apparently not. They have been found under some people’s gums. They haven’t caused any damage but they are still there and a completely unnecessary part of toothpaste. So, how do you pick toothpaste out from that gigantic isle in the grocery store? It’s simple; you don’t need toothpaste at all. “WHAT?!” you say. [...]

Invisalign

Before Invisalign is a great option for our patients to improve both the health and esthetics of their smile by aligning their teeth. Here at Steveston Smiles we have been improving smiles using this modern approach to straightening teeth since 2007 and are now proud to be an Invisalign Preferred Provider. The first step in the Invisalign treatment process is to take x-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth, which Invisalign will use to create a digital 3-D image of your teeth. Based on your individual treatment plan, a series of custom-made, clear aligners is then created specifically for you. These aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that fits comfortably over your teeth. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. [...]

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Maybe you have heard your friends, family or even other patients in the office talk about the benefits of Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas”. It may be an option during your or your kids next dental appointment. What is Nitrous Oxide? Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective, non-allergenic, non-irritating sedative gas that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. It is one of the safest forms of sedation available. Most patients begin to feel the effects of the Nitrous Oxide take effect within 5-10 minutes. After the treatment is complete the effects of this gas are completely reversed within 10 minutes by breathing Oxygen through the same mask. Who can have Nitrous Oxide? Almost all patients; There [...]

April is Dental Health Month

Every April to celebrate Dental Health Month myself and my staff go out into the community as well as offer in-office school tours to help educate kids about oral health. Kids are an important part of our dental practice here at Steveston Smiles and we are passionate about educating kids and their parents about proper oral care. We want the kids in our community to have strong healthy teeth and mouths for a lifetime. Our in office tours were done for the Steveston Community Centre pre-school program. Our in office tours are an opportunity for both the kids and their parents to come and checkout our office in person. The kids visit each treatment room and shown a different aspect of oral health, for example, brushing, flossing, or healthy and [...]
