How Acupuncture Treats Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders

For many people experiencing pain and dysfunction in their Temporomandibular joint and the muscles that control jaw movement - a condition commonly called “TMJ”, acupuncture serves as one of the most effective drug-free treatments available. TMJ can be caused by a combination of muscle tension (teeth grinding or bruxism), anatomical problems, and injury. Sometimes, there may be a psychological component from someone clenching their jaw during a time of emotional tension, intense determination, or desperation, with most people completely unaware these muscles can remain contracted for long periods of time. Over time and repetition, the symptoms include everything from severe headaches, neck/shoulder pain, earaches or dizziness to pain whist chewing or opening your mouth. Fortunately, for those suffering from TMJ, acupuncture is extremely helpful in relieving the inflammation, pain and [...]

TMD Headaches –Putting The Bite On Pain

I have patients come in complaining of headaches; of course I ask if they have been under any more stress and if they have noticed if they are clenching or grinding their teeth. Unfortunately, people are under a lot of stress these days and most clenching or grinding occurs while we are sleeping and unaware so most people aren’t sure how to answer. Many have managed their headaches with over-the-counter painkillers and prescription drugs, but few have considered their pain may stem from their jaw (Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)) and they never thought to mention it to me. Often, they have heard the term, but have no idea how it might apply to them. As a dentist, I’m trained in all structures related to oral health and dentition including the muscles [...]

Toothpaste

Toothpaste has been in the news a lot lately. Colgate Total was in the news a while back because it contains Triclosan which has been shown to cause both cancer and developmental problems in rodents. Of course we are not rodents but this is still concerning. Most recently, Crest 3D has been in the news for containing small plastic beads made out of polyethylene. I always assumed that these colourful beads were soluble and not a concern, apparently not. They have been found under some people’s gums. They haven’t caused any damage but they are still there and a completely unnecessary part of toothpaste. So, how do you pick toothpaste out from that gigantic isle in the grocery store? It’s simple; you don’t need toothpaste at all. “WHAT?!” you say. [...]

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Maybe you have heard your friends, family or even other patients in the office talk about the benefits of Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas”. It may be an option during your or your kids next dental appointment. What is Nitrous Oxide? Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective, non-allergenic, non-irritating sedative gas that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. It is one of the safest forms of sedation available. Most patients begin to feel the effects of the Nitrous Oxide take effect within 5-10 minutes. After the treatment is complete the effects of this gas are completely reversed within 10 minutes by breathing Oxygen through the same mask. Who can have Nitrous Oxide? Almost all patients; There [...]

April is Dental Health Month

Every April to celebrate Dental Health Month myself and my staff go out into the community as well as offer in-office school tours to help educate kids about oral health. Kids are an important part of our dental practice here at Steveston Smiles and we are passionate about educating kids and their parents about proper oral care. We want the kids in our community to have strong healthy teeth and mouths for a lifetime. Our in office tours were done for the Steveston Community Centre pre-school program. Our in office tours are an opportunity for both the kids and their parents to come and checkout our office in person. The kids visit each treatment room and shown a different aspect of oral health, for example, brushing, flossing, or healthy and [...]
